Searcher 3.0 asked:

Todays stock market plunge almost guarantees that McCain can’t get off-topic and go on a character attack. If he decides to ignore the economy and go after Obama, I think he is done.

Thoughts?

I think that you are a poor predictor of what will happen.

Mccain said he is not an expert in the economy but today he is forced to speak about the economy considering the market plunged to 700 points which is very bad for the economy

It will have something to do with it.

Running a campaign based on the ups and downs of the market would be lunacy.

You are right, except I would argue he is done anyway.

McCain has every reason to focus on the economy.

His economic recovery plan is clearly superior to Obama plan of rapid destruction of what’s left of our economy.

It’s the economy, stupid.

No one cares anymore about William Ayers or ACORN or the Rev. Wright or any of those so-called issues that the Republicans keep bringing up. In a normal election cycle, when the economy is humming along and people are happy and even apathetic, it would matter.

This is a completely different type of election.

He wont go after Obama. It would make him look bad. As much as he wants to win, he’d rather look good than anything else. He’s a maverick!

agreed. I think the whole mess is a reaction to Palin. the thought that she could be POTUS. sent the markets in a tailspin. Wall Street has rejected mcSame.

It definitely won’t help him, but McCain’s plan was to focus mainly on the economy and only briefly attack Obama’s character anyway. Even if the market had another good day, that’s not enough to reassure people about the crappy state of the economy.

I don’t think it changes McCain’s strategy much. He has to successfully argue that he has better economic plans than Obama. Which since he doesn’t, will be a hell of a challenge.

I think it was wise for McCain to finally launch an offensive on the economy but two things stand out for me. 1. Is his plan (http://tinyurl.com/4ah8c2} too little too late? 2. Will he follow the call of his supporters and concentrate on personal issues and guilt by association?

I cannot imagine the attacks working if people are losing the ground beneath their feet.

Did new poll numbers come out and show that Obama is creeping ahead a bit more? That would explain why it dropped. It’s been doing it for months, now that we are close to the end, it’s really dropping fast.

It’s just one more day closer to McCain’s retirement with or without the debate. The whole Republican camp has been disintegrated during GWB’s years watch. I would like to see the election to be over ASAP.

One thing the GOP has not learned is that you cannot lie your way into prosperity. People know when they are poor. Too bad some of our leaders don’t understand that we are becoming a nation of paupers. But we know it.

I do not think McCain is prepared to attack Obama to his face. He will say something only if he is asked. It is going to be a milk toast attack. I do think the stock market will effect his debate strategy tonight. If the stock market was up again he would have said some bs about how the economy is basically strong and he is the man to make it better and he will do that by lowering taxes not taxing the middle class blah blah. I do not think he has a plan that he can explain how to fix the crisis and now he has to figure out what to say.
